Jasmine Star has been such a blessing in my life in so many ways. Her blog was the first photographer’s blog that I started actively following way back in 2006. My friends, Mike and Kelly, were getting married and they had the Boutwell’s as their wedding photographer. When their engagement photos were posted on the Boutwells’ blog, I noticed they had a list of other photographer’s blogs and I couldn’t help but be drawn first to “Jasmine Star” because she and I shared a name. And a pretty awesome one at that.

Since then, I’ve shared a Starbox Lunch with her and have seen her speak at many different speaking engagements like a San Diego PUG meeting and the Free to Succeed Tour. Each time I listen to her speak, I am always so inspired by the way that God continues to move in her life - not only as a photographer, but as a person.

When she started having workshops, they were selling out so quickly that each time I wanted to sign up, I’d always miss out because I’d be away from my facebook/twitter during the day. You know, someone’s gotta teach the kids. Luckily, when this last workshop was posted, I just SO happened to be on my fb and signed up within minutes!

It was such an amazing day at the workshop. I am so excited to really work on my branding and really figuring out and defining who “Jasmine Marie Photography” really is. It’s been a difficult process, but one that I am embracing and actually looking forward to.

One of the best parts of the workshop was being able to shoot side-by-side with Jasmine and really picking her brain to get a glimpse of what she’s thinking when she’s shooting. It was super hot, but Melinda and Vern were such troopers and so much fun to shoot. The ever-so-sweet and uberly-talent Vivian Tran of All Made Up team did the make-up and Carissa of JL Designs made the beautiful bouquet. So much talent!

Thanks, Jasmine! You are such a rock star! :)

Awhile back, a note went around facebook asking people to list 25 random things about themselves. It was so widespread that it even made news! After getting several invites, I felt compelled to see what I’d come up with so I did it.

I thought I’d share it on my blog too:

1) I absolutely, wholeheartedly love my husband. God has given me a great love story and I love watching it unfold before me. He has seen the in’s and out’s of me and still loves me in spite of all of that.

2) I fight the fact that I’m turning into my Mom, but the more I fight it, the more I realize I subconsciously want to be like her. I’m still hoping for the day we can be closer again. We’re stuck in an awkward, no-longer-a-kid phase and not-quite-a-real-adult phase with each other.

3) I am known for always having a camera in my hand and I LOVE it. When I was a kid, I was always in front of my Mom’s camera, and ever since I got a camera when I was 11, one can often find me behind one. I think it’s the deep desire to capture memories that pass so quickly they’re easy to forget.

4) I abhor cleaning bathrooms - even if it’s my own.

5) I think one of my callings in life is to be a Mom. I keep putting it off and don’t feel ready for it now, but am excited that it’ll be coming up in a couple of years. (God willing)

6) I have always had a small number of people I’ve considered my closest friends, but I’m fiercely devoted and loyal to them.

7) I love my Mac. I love it way too much and probably spend too much time on it. It’s often a point of contention with my hubby.

8) I almost always remember my dreams and my deepest fears and insecurities always manifest themselves into my nightmares.

9) I get sinus infections way too easily.

10) I am a Southern California girl at heart. I love the beach and sun even though I don’t go very often. I can’t stand anything below 50 degrees and will happily wear flip flops everyday if I could.

11) I have always been a bookworm. When I was a kid, I was either behind a book or coloring/drawing. Once I start a book, I have absolutely no self-control and will stay up until the wee hours to finish the whole thing in one day.

12) I am incredibly LIST-y! I make lists and lists and lists. Currently I’m using a mini-notebook to gather up all my lists and what not and surprisingly, it’s working well for me so far.

13) I want to travel to Santorini one day. Adam always asks me why and I respond with, “I want to take pretty pictures!” hehe.

14) I have traveled once alone with Seminar at Sea from San Diego, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama Canal, Jamaica, and Cayman Islands. I learned more about myself and made some of the best friends ever on that trip than I ever did on any other trip in my life.

15) I love waterfalls. I’ve hiked up to the top of Vernal & Nevada Falls in Yosemite and Dunn’s River Falls (Ocho Rios) in Jamaica, but hope to hike to top of Yosemite Falls in the future.

16) I am truly a hopeless romantic. I’ve always been.

17) Chinese food is comfort food to me. Nothing beats a meal at home.

18) I can be real bossy, but that’s just the big sister in me. Guess that’s why I became a teacher, huh?

19) I love driving and do my best thinking in the car. And singing too. ;)

20) My hubby and I watch Friends DVDs when there’s nothing on TV. We love being at home way too much. Esp when it involves cuddling on the couch and watching TV. Homebodies to the core!

21) I am naturally an introvert. Adam is too, but he can fake being an extrovert much better than I do.

22) I always crave salty things. French fries… yummm.

23) I am really good at remembering lyrics, but horrible at remembering numbers/dates.

24) I cry super easily. My theory is that when God was designing me, He must have put too much “emotion” in on accident, but it’s not healthy for ONE person to have so much of it. Often when I feel something (happy or sad) in huge quantities, crying is the only way I can get all those emotions out. Once it is out though, I feel much better.

25) I love kids. I love teaching (most days) and watching students grow in their learning.

Today marks an important milestone for Adam and I. As of today, April 11th, we will have been together for 7 years. It has been a long, wonderful journey so far and I can only imagine what God has in store for us in the years to come. When I think back to when we were first dating, back in our early twenties and just how stupid and young I was back then… it makes me wonder what I’ll think in another 7 years.

God has blessed me with 7 wonderful years with my now husband. I am so thankful for him everyday. He is a much kinder, more generous person than I am and he continues to make me strive to be a better person.

I Love You More Than Blank is a website where people anonymously share things that they love their significant others more than. There are different categories like: The Benjamins, Coffee vs. Fizz, Wired, etc.

iloveyoumorethan2.jpg

So in honor of our 7-year anniversary, I decided to make my own list! I thought that his would fit too for this week’s “I Heart…”

I decided to make one up for each of the categories to help keep me focused because thinking of things that I love Adam more than could potentially get very, very, very long. :)

My dearest husband…

  • I love you more than spending time in bookstores.
  • I love you more than diet Coke, homecooked Chinese food, and Snickers bars.
  • I love you more than all beautiful waterfalls in the world.
  • I love you more than reading blogs.
  • I love you more than cuddling and snuggling with the blankets.
  • I love you more than I love San Diego and Southern California.
  • I love you more than I love my MacBook Pro. Really, I do.
  • I love you more and more each and every single day.

I love you Adam. I love you more than anything and everything I’ll ever come up with for my “I Heart…” series. I’m so thankful that God gave me you as a husband. Thanks for these 7 years. I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Who doesn’t like singing waiters and waitresses every 30 minutes? And being able to put trash into a bucket on your table? That’s not something you get at just any restaurant. Plus, if it’s your birthday, they don’t sing to you… they embarrass you in front of the everyone else which means MORE free entertainment!

After the Rock Baptism on Friday, we headed out to celebrate Jack and Daniel’s birthday and Vaness and Daniel’s baptism. Since we’re all family, the Rock Photographers joined us too. Of course, the loudest and most rowdiest people in the restaurant were us Christians in the back. And who ever said Christians can’t have fun? ;)

_MG_5965edit.jpgJack and Daniel about to race each other.

_MG_5971edit.jpgJack is supposed to be a bird (?)

_MG_5973edit.jpgAnd Daniel a cowboy.

Happy birthday Jack and Daniel!

If I said that I didn’t care about the comments on my blog, I would be a liar liar pants on fire. I’m not the best blogger there is out there so when people do drop by and leave some blog love behind, it’s exciting to me. Yes, I’m easily amused.

I’ve been watching the number of my comments inch towards 400 in hopes of honoring my 400th commenter with a gift card. Other photographers have done this on their blogs and I’ve always wanted to be that special commenter for them, so I thought I’d do it for my blog readers.

So, congrats to Cathy Crawley for being my 400th commenter! Cathy is one of my facebook photog friends and I finally got to meet her at WPPI last month. She came all the way from Australia and just the sheer fact that she traveled halfway across the world to go to this convention made me want to give her a bigger hug! She is such a sweetheart and her photography is AMAZING. She has such a cute post about Disneyland on her blog right now. Check it out!

Cathy, please email me back with whether you’d like a $10 gift card to Amazon or iTunes.

And because you can’t post without a picture, I went searching through some of my WPPI photos and thought about Daniel’s photos of us. This is us being silly. Now, don’t you want to be our friends? :)

(I was trying to glow in the green MGM light with my green sweater on. And yes, this was done while being sober. ha!)

I came across this from Ohana’s blog and couldn’t help but want to post it up myself. As a school teacher myself, I get to see first hand just how much budget cuts are hurting our students and the fact that Tim Ferriss wants to try to help out U.S. public school students is just awesome.

Here are the details:

“Tweet To Beat could generate help for thousands of students in high-need public schools. My colleagues and I are cheering you on!”
-Charles Best, CEO of DonorsChoose.org

The Ethical Bribe

The gist: To benefit U.S. public school students, I will bribe the entire world to follow me on Twitter for $3 each.

I’ll also be giving away a round-trip ticket anywhere in the world and a fully-loaded MacBook Pro. But first things first…

This is “Tweet to Beat”, a follow-up experiment to LitLiberation, which was a campaign by bloggers and their readers, and CEOs and their employees, to spread the power of literacy worldwide. It was a new fundraising model based on competition and social media scalability, and it funded not only US public school projects (20,000+ students) but also libraries and schools in developing countries. I’m in Vietnam with readers right now to visit two of the schools.

With zero financing or hard costs, this model ended up raising more than $250,000 in less than a month, 3x more than Stephen Colbert during that same period.

The Experiment

I think that was just the tip of the iceberg, and Twitter is the perfect laboratory for a new-and-improved approach (at least with a few variables).

It’s public and therefore accountable, it’s trackable, it allows exclusive communication with followers when needed (”protect my updates” under settings), and it’s current media popularity makes it the ideal PR vehicle for this campaign. Last but not least, though this experiment has no victims, produces no spam, nor violates the Twitter Terms of Service, this alternative use will get some purists hot and bothered.

Here’s how the Tweet to Beat campaign works:

1) For every new Twitter follower in the next two weeks, I will donate $1 to DonorsChoose.org, and an anonymous supporter will match $2, for a total of $3 to U.S. public school classrooms per follower. For now, the matching limit is tentatively capped at 50,000 new followers, though I’m open to increasing it later. 50,000 new followers would mean $150,000 to U.S. public school education, and I hope to double or triple this total with a few twists.

The goal is directly helping 25,000 U.S. public school students in low-income and high-need areas in two weeks. This timeline is half the time dedicated to LitLiberation. My current follower count is, at the time of this writing, 22,782, so we’ll round down and begin the count at 22,500.

2) There is a simultaneous competition for those who would like to spread the word. Just do the best you can (Facebook, blog, e-mail friends, FriendFeed, add to your e-mail signature, tell local media, etc.) and detail what you did in the comments here. Tell your friends who are teachers and encourage them to do the same. Bonus points go to people who act sooner vs. later. Deadline for comments is March 23rd at 5pm PT.

If you’re able, I suggest you use a service like http://bit.ly to get a unique URL for this post so you can track clicks on your individual link as you promote it. Click-throughs are more important than “exposure”. Here are a few links you can use:

How Little Does It Take?

I hope you choose to participate and make a difference. Karmic capitalism doesn’t take much.

Taking an hour to mentor a child, sending a single e-mail, or following someone on Twitter — remember that the small things are often what have the biggest impact, as we actually do them.

Please spread the word and further the experiment. I’ll share all of the results so others can duplicate them with non-profits worldwide.

Interested in doing more? Please consider donating a few dollars directly to U.S. classrooms near you through DonorsChoose.org.

This should have been posted under the “Why I love Adam so much” WPPI blog. Hehe.

We had a jam-packed final day at WPPI. I woke up early to go help out at the Shootsac booth. I had a blast helping out because for a couple of hours I was the cool bag lady handing out the super rad Shootsac tote bags. They were going SO fast that we had to slow down and then I was no longer the most awesome person at the trade show. Ha.

Surprisingly enough, I didn’t take very many photos on this day. Too busy absorbing all the madness around me, I suppose.

And her friend, Alana!

I left WPPI this year, inspired and excited about what’s ahead for Jasmine Marie Photography. Hopefully next year we can stay longer and even check out some of the classes.

We left Vegas in the evening and had to drive through a lot of rain and even some snow. All in all, it was a great trip! Can’t wait til next year!

Sorry the photos are so grainy! Should have just left the flash ON the point and shoot. :(

WPPI is amazing! We LOVE WPPI!”

It was Day 2 of our WPPI trip and at this point we really hadn’t done anything “WPPI- related” unless you count when we picked up our badges in the morning. We were having fun just being tourists in Vegas and we kept cheering on how much fun WPPI was wherever we went!

IMG_1398.jpg

The Galangs!

Adam was so cute and proud when he saw that his badge said, “Jasmine Marie Photography” on it.

We had lunch at the Terrace Cafe at the Wynn Hotel. We had the pleasure of Ginger, who recently moved to Vegas and was Vaness’ MOH, to join us at lunch. Adam and I ate at this cafe when were in Vegas a couple of months ago and thought we’d come back. I just love all the little details in how the restaurant (and the whole hotel actually) is decorated.

IMG_1402.jpg

We had delicious mozarella/risotto cheese sticks. YUM!

IMG_1403.jpg

And Daniel and I had a prime rib sandwich.

Afterwards, we walked around as touristas and took photos. I LOVE these parasols. So rich in color!

Since we didn’t get a chance to do our couples shoot in the desert like we had wanted, we decided to do an impromptu engagement session at the Wynn! Who says photographers can’t be flexible? Poor Ginger had to deal with us crazy photogs.

WPPI is SO awesome!

We went back to the timeshare and rested up a bit before hitting up the GO|BEE and Photography Mentor’s party at the Luxor. We also were on a quest to find a super tall drink for our super small friend, Vaness, before the party. That was fun.

The party itself was quite fun. None of us had ever been in a Las Vegas suite before, so that in itself was cool. We had fun with the Fotocabina photobooth. You can see a cool slideshow on Sara France’s blog.

Photobooth WPPI 2009_1.jpg

I have no clue what we’re doing here.

IMG_1419.jpg

We also had a great time dancing too! I ran into a lot of photogs I hadn’t seen in awhile and when it started to get really crowded and hot, we decided to leave. Luckily, on the way out, we ran into Jasmine Star and JD! Vaness and Adam finally got to meet her for the first time and they couldn’t stop talking about her the rest of the night. Adam seriously said that meeting Jasmine Star made the whole trip worth it and he could go home happy. Everyone was too starstruck to ask for a photo though.

So many cool people at WPPI!

IMG_1424.jpg

After the party, we met up with Catie Ronquillo, the Atreros, Marissa and Stan and Jeanette of Trailbrook Photography. We walked all the way to Excalibur to get our grub on, but all we could think about was this hole-in-the-wall Mexican food place we had driven by on our way to the party. So we walked all the way back and decided we would try it out knowing that our high expectations being spoiled San Diegans would probably not be met.

We figured, the more dive-y the place, the better the Mexican food would be. It was quite an adventure. First, the main sign had lights that were out so it was supposed to be “Tacos Mexico” but it was now “Tacos Ex.” The drive-thru didn’t have a working call box thing (not sure what it was called) AND it didn’t have a menu so we didn’t know what to order. At this point, it was starting to rain too. The boys really wanted carne asada fries. When we finally rolled up to the window, we noticed there was a bug zapper in the window. Ah yeah, real quality food here now. Then, it took ages for us to actually get our food - it better be worth all this trouble.

IMG_1430.jpg

However, when we finally got back to the timeshare and got our grub on, it was SO WORTH IT. Not quite up to par by San Diego’s standards being spoiled by the Roberto’s, Cotixan’s, Lolita’s, etc all throughout the city. Still, it was past midnight at this point and it was quite yummy.

Man, we love WPPI.

The One with WPPI 2009 - Day 1

February 25, 2009

We left for WPPI on Valentine’s Day. All week long, we kept hearing reports about all the rain (and possible snow) that would dump upon Southern California and Vegas that weekend but we had clear, blue skies all the way through the whole weekend until the late night drive home.

We had a fun drive to Vegas and finally got to catch up with the one-month-weds Daniel and Vaness. It was such a treat to talk “wedding” and hear all about the exciting stuff going on with them.

IMG_1336.jpg

Getting our photog on in Barstow.

IMG_1338.jpg
I’ll translate Adam’s look for you: “Are we really starting to take photos ALREADY? We’re not even in Vegas yet.”

We stopped in what is quite possibly the biggest In ‘n’ Out EVER. It seriously had line barriers like you’d find at Disneyland! We also had the pleasure of running into Ed and Karen Atrero for the first time out of the dozen of times we would later run into them actually in Vegas. Such a treat to see PPT peeps while sipping on a strawberry milkshake. Yum!

IMG_1339.jpg

IMG_1340.jpg

IMG_1341.jpg

Then, we were back on the road again. Originally we had wanted to stop at a desert place, or what I described as a “rusty, dirty, run-down” place for some couple shots and we did drive past a really cool abandoned gas station, but the timing was always off. People were napping or the next stop to turn around and go back was too far. So we didn’t end up doing any “married sessions” in the desert like we had hoped.

IMG_1342.jpg

IMG_1344.jpg
We did drive past some snow - which was a first for me. I’ve been to Vegas more than 20+ times in my life and have never seen snow on the way there. Seemed quite paradoxical - hot desert & snow.

IMG_1348.jpg
I’ve always wanted to get out and take a shot with one foot in Nevada and one in California, but we did a drive-by instead.

So we finally made it to Vegas, and made good time while at it! We checked into the MGM Grand and it started to feel real that we were in Vegas for WPPI. We bummed around for a little bit and then decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day dinner at Bellagio’s buffet. YUM! There was a super long line for it, but it was SO worth it.

IMG_1359.jpg
My first plate. Everything was de-LISH! Daniel couldn’t stop talking about how great the Chilean Sea Bass was all night.

IMG_1362.jpg
Daniel and Vaness’ plates.

One of the things I love the most about the Bellagio buffet are their super cute desserts. Lucky for me, the Galangs love desserts and grabbed a whole bunch of them so I could take pictures of them. Say you say “tourista”?

desserts0.jpg

And then I went to the dessert bar and took more photos. Aren’t they cute?!

What does one do with a full stomach after eating at the buffet? Why, take pictures of course! And so ensued the random picture-taking.

Once we could pry our gluttonous butts of the chairs, we headed over to the Bellagio Conservatory. They re-decorate this beautiful area several times a year. So far, I’ve seen it at Christmas a handful of times, 4th of July, Autumn and Summer-themed. I was so happy to see that they had it decorated in honor of Chinese New Year! It made me proud to be Chinese.

_MG_1875.jpg

This is a Chinese god of money - hence, all the coins he’s standing on top of. There’s a mini porcelain statue in my parent’s home that I used to play with as a kid. See those things sticking out of his head? Well, I broke one - and thus ended the time I would play with my grandparents’ strange-looking Chinese gods.

_MG_1906.jpg

We headed back to MGM after this and called it a night. Definitely a lovely Valentine’s Day to remember.

My husband, Adam, didn’t want to be a photographer. In all honesty, he probably dislikes my camera at times. Probably A LOT. Mostly due to the fact that he often finds himself as the subject of my photos. I’m not completely sure if he dislikes my camera more or less than my computer, but that’s a whole other story.

When I first started taking my photography more seriously, I toyed with the idea of Adam joining me and being my second shooter… Kind of like being the JD to my Jasmine Star. (You like that analogy?) He really did NOT want to do that and had no interest in taking photos at all. Needless to say, at that point in time, I was disappointed that he didn’t take more of a interest in something that meant so much to me.

A year later, he continues to be my partner in Christ, but now is also a partner in my business as my CFO and bag carrier extraordinaire.

I came home from WPPI last week super tired, full of ideas and inspiration for my business, but even more than all of that - even more in love with my husband.

You wouldn’t think a trip to Vegas, to a huge convention with thousands of other photographers from around world would do that for my marriage, but it did. Adam didn’t really want to go with me, but after some subtle persuasion (read “insert pouty face”) he decided he wanted to come to support me. We went with the newlyweds (Daniel and Vaness) and had a wonderful weekend getaway.

I expected Adam to get tired, grumpy, overwhelmed by the number of people and products at the trade show and then go hide somewhere while I would secretly be upset with why my husband didn’t understand how important this was to me. Two years ago, I read some photographers’ blogs and they had posted about attending WPPI. I googled it, of course, and remembered thinking to myself how cool it would be to be able to go to WPPI and be a part of all the fun. It felt more like something to dream about, but probably would never happen to me. So of course, I wanted Adam to be a part of it all when this dream of mine finally came true.

My husband wow-ed me beyond my expectations. I was already beyond myself that Adam even came along for the trip, but he was just so amazing ALL weekend long.

So here is a list of reasons why I love my hubby even MORE after WPPI:

* He was open to everything and anything that I wanted to do that weekend.

* He continues to learn about taking photos and is learning how to shoot manual.

* He was so excited when he got his badge and it said “Jasmine Marie Photography” on it.

* He came with me to the Go|Bee and Photography Mentor’s party at the Luxor Suite and danced up a storm with me.

* He was beside himself for hours that he got to meet Jasmine Star and JD. He said the whole weekend was worth it because he got to meet Jasmine Star. He couldn’t stop talking about her!

* He woke up early the next day to drop me off to help at the Shootsac booth and then arrived early at the tradeshow with the clothes I wanted to change into after my shift at Shootsac. THEN, he helped me unfold the many giveaway totes that Shootsac was giving away because they were going so fast!

* He walked the tradeshow floor with Daniel and Vaness while he waited for me to finish my shift.

* He made sure I sat down for a little bit to eat the lunch he bought me before I walked the tradeshow floor. He also made sure I drank water periodically throughout the afternoon.

* After my three hour shift, he walked the whole tradeshow floor again with me. When I had too many pamphlets, knick knacks, and flyers in my hands - he would take them from me and put them into his bag. He didn’t make any remarks about why I gathering up all this weird stuff.

* Then, as if that wasn’t enough, he did not complain ONCE while walking the floor with me. He didn’t rush me when I dawdled through some booths I couldn’t get enough of. He didn’t pout when his feet hurt. He didn’t get mad when I went in circles. NOTHING. In fact, he would listen in to the conversations I was having with various vendors and asked really good questions too!

* He drove us home through the rain and snow (!!) and didn’t complain that we got home at midnight which would mean he’d be tired the rest of the week catching up on the rest we missed out on during the weekend.

* And last but not least, (I could keep going on and on and on) he is wholeheartedly my number one fan. I love you Adam. Thank you so much for supporting me. It means the world to me.

Here’s a photo of Adam playing his role of following me and carrying all my stuff while walking the tradeshow while Daniel is playing the role of me being super awesome?

More photos to come from WPPI! :)
